Grains and the American Diet

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Today’s American diet has grains in everything. Our typical side dishes include rice, bread, wheat pasta, or corn. The crops that go into these products are not necessarily that healthy and most people are sensitive to one of these grains, if not all of them and may not know it. The fact of the matter is that our gut is where our health starts and poor digestion can cause all kinds of disease over time.

I am going to give some good healthy choices to use instead of bread, rice, wheat pasta, or russet potato (high sugar). That’s right, these turn into sugar in our bodies which we need for fuel but today it is way over done and that is why our society is overweight, if not obese.

So let’s starts with a sandwich. Why not use some leafy green lettuce to wrap that meat around and the beloved hamburger could have grilled portabella mushrooms for the bun.

Spaghetti: I have used spaghetti squash it is wonderful! Buy it at your local market, just cut it open, scrape seeds out and steam it. After it is cooked you scrape the inside out and it comes out like noodles. With a good red sauce and meat, it is just great.

Side dishes for dinner can be a small sweet potato or yam.  They are very good for you and low in sugar and full of vitamins.

I also enjoy green beans steamed with sea salt and olive oil with a nice grilled chicken or any good quality meat you choose.

It’s summer so try some of the summer squashes, also a carbohydrate, but a good healthy one, and don’t forget your fat on the top of these great veggies.  A little butter or the olive oil is healthy and very good!

Reduce Risk of Breast Cancer by Becoming Active

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

We all know that a good diet and exercise can provide us with a higher quality of life.  Some people, however, are not aware that exercise and a healthy diet can save the life of even young adults.  Research has shown that overweight females are targeted for a variety of cancers, but mainly breast cancer.  By reducing obesity and maintain a healthy active lifestyle, younger women will give themselves an additional tool to fight breast cancer.

Body fat in females increases the amount of estrogen in the body, therefore increasing the risk of falling victim to breast cancer.  Three separate studies have shown a decrease in women getting breast cancer who take the time to maintain a healthy body weight.  All of this can seem daunting to any woman who needs to shed several pounds.  Where do you start?  How do you begin?  It often times seems there is not enough time in the day to fit in exercise.  Unfortunately, it is an issue that must be dealt with to avoid increasing your chances of becoming a victim of breast cancer.

Simply increasing activity in your daily routine will give your body the craving to continue increasing your activity level.  Setting your alarm twenty minutes earlier and beginning your morning with stretches and a minor work out will increase the flow of your blood, strengthen your heart, and speed up your metabolism.  After two weeks of this, set your alarm back forty minutes earlier and take in a longer exercise.  Walking during a lunch break is a great way to fit in mid-day activity.  Even if the walk is just a brief ten minute walk around the office building a few times or around the block, you are fighting being sedentary and increasing physical activity.

Many women have found that taking in a fun weekend sport such as volleyball, softball, swimming, or tennis has been a great way to stay active while making new friends.  When you lack the motivation or the energy to haul yourself out of your normal routine, remind yourself that your life may depend upon staying active and healthy.  The more active you become the more weight you will lose.  Shedding off unwanted pounds can be accomplished through a normal exercise routine. The key is to find the routine that bests works with your schedule so you will be more apt to stay with it.

Obesity Rates

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

66% of Americans are considered overweight.  This number shows that” healthy” Americans are now the minority. This 66% percent breaks down to about 62% of women and 71% of men. Of this 66%, about 31% are considered obese. This 31% breaks down to about 33% of women and 30% of men. As this overall number rises, so do the chances that these people will suffer from chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. In 1980 the obesity rate was 15%. It has more than doubled since then. It is projected that in seven years, if things keep on going like they have been the percentage of overweight Americans will be at 75%.

Here in California we are somewhat better than other states with an obesity rate of 22.6%. This is still much too high. Colorado has the lowest obesity rates and Mississippi comes in with the highest. As these numbers increase, more and more people are looking for the easy way to fix this problem. They are turning to diet pills, and surgeries like liposuction and gastric bypass. Of course, these are not the answers to solve our country’s epidemic obesity problem. People need to learn how change their lifestyle. They need to stop super sizing their portions and start increasing their activity level with exercise and healthy activities. Unfortunately we are seeing increases in obesity rates with children as well. We are already in a bad place now and the statistics are getting even worse. We all need to do our part to improve these numbers. A great place it can start is by teaching our kids how to live healthy lifestyles and for the adults need to make better decisions at the grocery store.
